and Love Prevails

Monday January 15, 2024

The Program Begins at 4 p.m.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial ("Masonic Temple"), 101 Callahan Drive, Alexandria.

The event is free to attend. We encourage you to make a donation of any size to support the cost of the event.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Planning Committee is excited to invite you to the 51st Anniversary Celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy. This year's theme is Shifting the Cultural Climate: Violence Ceases and Love Prevails.

We hope you'll attend an evening that will include delicious food, uplifting music, and, a panel discussion in which experts will share their thoughts on Dr. King's life and how it resonates even 55 years after his tragic murder.

* There is no cost to attend; however, we appreciate your registering so we know how many will be attending.

51 years after Alexandria Activist Alice P Morgan began the Celebration, the dream lives on...

In 1973, Alexandria civic leader and activist, Alice P. Morgan initiated the City’s first memorial program in honor of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The program was endorsed by then Mayor Charles Beatley to be held on King’s birthday.  This was a decade prior to President Ronald Reagan signing the holiday bill into law in 1983 and three decades prior to every state recognizing and celebrating Dr. King’s birthday as a National Holiday in 2000.

Will you support our efforts...

As a Donor?

The 51st Anniversary Celebration is free for all Alexandrians to attend but it is quite costly to put on. We appreciate each and every person for giving the amount that they can...whether $10, $50, $100 or more. Thank you for supporting our efforts to keep the dream alive!

As a volunteer?

There is a lot of work involved in creating a celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy. Please reach out if you would be interested in joining our team to help plan and carry out the event on January 15. We are looking for people who can manage an invitation list, help decorate our venue, assist to set up and take down  the event, write thank you letters, find sponsors and partners, and more.
